Specimens of GREEN APATITE on ORANGE CALCITE from the Otter Lake Diggings (Yates Mine), in Otter Lake, Quebec, Canada have become famous among mineral collectors world wide for their vivid colors and intense contrast. This piece is an outstanding and highly aesthetic specimen of apatite from Otter Lake. The apatite crystal shows sharp crystal form, good luster, a deep earthy moss green color, and a dramatic contrast it presents against the calcite. I purchased this specimen from Darryl MacFarlane (who ran the mine for as long as I can remember); he only had a couple of new pieces on hand for the Tucson Gem Rock and Mineral Show, and they all came from past mining efforts. Today the mine has been closed and the site reclaimed. As often happens, when the cost of removing ever-deeper overburden outgrew the return from selling the crystals, the mine had to be closed.
